Game of Thrones, the epic fantasy TV series based on the books by George R.R. Martin was more than just any other book adaptation that people watched for fun. This TV show had a life of it’s own, it’s characters loved far and wide and its story line bringing all sorts of emotions to the loyal fans the world over.
But as the Nelly Furtado song goes, all good things must come to an end. As they should. Too much of the same thing can turn sour pretty quick and so as with everything else in life, we must move on to the next one.
Some of us may take longer than others to fully get over the loss of a favourite TV show, but do not despair because the world of cinema and television has so much more to offer! So, we’re going to do our best to rise to the occasion and hopefully recommend some alternatives to everyone’s favourite show.
If you still haven’t gotten over the whole 18th century medieval aura and you absolutely love all things magic and mystic, we recommend excellent TV shows such as Merlin which chronicles the life of, you guessed it, the most famous sorcerer Merlin and The Shannara Chronicles which consist of the adventures of a princess, a conniving thief and a mysterious hero.
If that hasn’t got you convinced, we also recommend our personal favourites such as The Seventh Son starring the likes of Jeff Bridges as the witch hunter and Julianne Moore as the evil sorceress. If you appreciate fantasy but you’re not about that gore life, you might wanna tune into the 2011 TV series, Once Upon A Time which basically brought all our favourite Disney movies to life.
If you feel you’re still missing Khaleesi’s dragons, however, don’t worry cause we’ve got you covered. Luckily for all of us, there are several epic dragon centered films out there. But fair warning you might have trouble choosing one. From Dragonheart to Eragon and all the way down to The Hobbit’s magnificent Smaug, there isn’t a better way to lose yourself in the magical world of cinema.
If you loved the powerful women of the GoTs series more than anything else have we got a treat for you! Agent Carter might just have it all, from the action to the mystery, Agent Peggy Carter is not afraid to topple the patriarchy one case at a time. However, if you still feel that gap for the element of fantasy, well what movie trilogy is better than Resident Evil? Milla Jovovich is our favourite bad ass female warrior that takes out the un dead and does it with style.
If you wanna go back to a time where bad ass women might have been the exception but were in a league of their own, we’d recommend iconic shows such as Xena; Warrior Princess and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Both have all the right elements of a good fantasy drama and might just fill that never ending void that Khaleesi left behind.
If you loved the idea behind the special bond between Lyra and her Daemon, Pan but felt like the 2007 movie The Golden Compass didn’t quite make it in your eyes, then you should stay tuned for HBO’s take on the series titled, His Dark Materials with a confirmed cast including James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Clarke Peters.
